Session 3 of Nova Forum’s Summer Colloquium Contemplating God: Praying with the Greek Fathers. This series will be led by Nova Forum Senior Fellow and Executive Director, Professor David Albertson (University of Southern California).
For ancient Christian philosophers, Christian prayer is more than conversation, petition, or confession. The height of prayer is “contemplation” (theorein), a deep thinking or meditative understanding. In contemplation the mystery of God stirs the mind beyond its normal capacities and draws it into a vision beyond ordinary sight. Our summer colloquium will read selections from four Greek church fathers: Origen of Alexandria, Gregory of Nyssa, Evagrius of Pontus, and Dionysius the Areopagite. We’ll meet every Monday evening in July at 7:00pm PST. All members of USC and Pepperdine communities are welcome (students, faculty, staff). Please register using the button below, so we can send you the PDF readings and Zoom links. If you have any questions about this event, please email us at novaforum@catholictrojan.org.
Readings for this session will include selections from On Prayer and can be found below.
