Platonism in the Americas: The Image of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe (1648) by Miguel Sánchez and the Platonic Tradition of Political Thought

  • Doheny Library (DML 110C) 3550 Trousdale Parkway Los Angeles, CA, 90089 United States (map)

Since the twentieth century, philosophers of religion have looked back to European religious texts as an archive of experience. Continental philosophy of religion today continues to explore continuities with Christian Platonist traditions from Augustine to Dionysius to Eckhart. Yet philosophy of religion rarely considers Christian sources beyond Europe. Pablo Irizar trained at KU Leuven in Belgium (PhD, Church History) and the Catholic University of Paris (PhD, Philosophy of Religion). After books on Augustine of Hippo and Bernard of Clairvaux, Irizar’s current project seeks to retrieve the sources of Christianity in Latin America as an archive for philosophy of religion and as a continuation of Christian Platonist traditions. Join us for two seminars on the questions and sources Irizar is recovering in dialogue with continental philosophy of religion.
